“Hi I’m Dr. Corey Maas, a board certified facial plastic surgeon and an associate clinical professor at the University of California, San Francisco. I’m a member of the prestigious International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery, and my focus today is an area of particular interest in to me, and that is hair restoration.
With hair restoration, it is such a common problem amongst men and women. 60% of men by the age of 60 have significant hair loss that is noted, and about a 5th of all women have significant hair loss. So it’s a really big problem and it’s something that we have really good answers for. There are medical treatments that we can do that really impact hair loss and there are certainly surgical treatments we can do and with the techniques we use today there's no question that this can be done without any evidence of previous surgery.
A lot of people are familiar with the old plugs and grafts that used to be done. That doesn’t happen anymore but this common problem is associated with hair loss that occurs because our full hairs that typically grow when we're younger, these are the anagen for hairs, gradually get thinner and thinner under the influence of the hormone testosterone and eventually, especially in genetically predisposed men, they completely lose these hairs, and this balding issue is something we can manage.
What's particularly important about hair restoration surgery is that you find the right doctor. This is an art as well as a science. There are corporations out there offering this type of work and I think you really want to go to a place where you're getting the artistry, care, and attention to detail that someone who is dedicated to this field can provide.
When we do these procedures for men and women, we're able to borrow hair from the back of the head in areas where you'll never see the incision and tiny little linear scars. All you see is the back, and that's hard to even detect and we're moving those hairs with a special technique called micro grafting. Where under a microscope, our technicians cut the hairs into individual follicular units, just like they grow on your head, and then with tiny little needles we make little slits in the frontal hairline or the back, and we place those graphs delicately just as your hair grows.
This is a wonderful procedure for great results. It’s something that has a very little downtime. Men and women can walk out of here with a hat on their head and people don’t need to know they had something done, same day surgery.
Let’s take a look at the couple of before and after pictures. I think you can clearly see that this is natural and restores the youthful, masculine vigor to any men, or women that gets hair transplantation or micro grafting surgery.
