Buttock augmentation can improve the overall appearance by adding fullness to underdeveloped areas of the buttock. Buttock implants made of a soft solid silicone gel are inserted through an inconspicuous incision made within the middle part of the buttock muscle in the are commonly referred to as the Gluteus Maximus.
Men and women who are unhappy with the underdeveloped size, shape, and/or volume of their buttocks are the primary candidates for buttock augmentation. Younger patients can expect better results than older patients due to issues related to skin elasticity.
More About Buttock Augmentation
Both local and general anesthetic may be used, depending on a number of factors. Your surgeon will discuss your options in more detail at the time of your consultation. On average, the surgery takes between one and two hours, and is normally performed on an outpatient basis.
Before your surgery, your plastic surgeon will ask questions to learn more about your medical history and any possible complications. Smokers will be asked to quit before the surgery to increase blood flow and help with the healing process.
Following surgery swelling and some mild discomfort, particularly when sitting, is to be expected for several weeks, although most people return to work in a week or two. Sitting should be avoided for at least a month to prevent complications, as should physical activity.
As with any cosmetic procedure, you should expect some scarring, which will fade as the advanced healing process (up to 2 years for buttock enhancement) fully takes place.
There are also several complications specific to this procedure including capsule hardening around the implant, rejection and asymmetry, all which would require additional surgery. As with all surgeries, the risk of infection is always present, and precautions to prevent it will be taken.
