Breast Reconstruction San Francisco

As medical surgery has progressed, the ability to surgeons to recreate a completely natural breast, sometimes immediately following mastectomy, has been an interesting development. Woman that have lost a breast due to cancer no longer have to suffer the humiliation of losing a breast.

There are different techniques for breast recontruction which involve either using the patients existing body issue or an implant for reconstruction. Most breast reconstruction involves a series of stages that occur over a period of time, for example, the nipple is added in a subsequent procedure,  but the earlier rounds are the most complex.

If you have been diagnosed with cancer and a mastectomy is planned, you should talk to a  reconstructive surgeon right away, who can put together a plan that is tailored to your situation and medical history.

More About Breast Reconstruction

Breast Reconstruction surgery is an in-patient procedure performed under general anesthesia over various two to six hour stages.

Recovery time can very greatly, but can last up to six weeks. Walking after surgery is good and will improve circulation and reduce swelling, but heavy lifting should be avoided for two months.

The usual risks associated with surgery, including bleeding, issues related to anesthesia, fluid collection, and excessive scar tissue are present with breast reconstruction. If an implant is used, an infection during the first few weeks is possible, requiring the implant to be temporarily removed. There is also the risk that an implant could shift, requiring another round of surgery.

Capsular contracture is also a possibility that can develop up to three years after the surgery, where the skin around the scar tissue shrinks around the implant, squeezing and hardening it.
