Radiesse® Injection

Of the many injectable materials that Dr. Maas offers, Radiesse® is one of the newest. In fact, Dr. Maas was a principle investigator in the FDA trials of Radiesse® injection, which was ultimately cleared for use in 2006. Considered a ‘new generation’ filler, Radiesse® differs from other cosmetic fillers in that it is comprised of very tiny, smooth calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) microspheres. CaHA is a biomaterial with over twenty years of use in orthopedics, neurosurgery, dentistry, and ophthalmology, and is the primary mineral constituent of bone and teeth. Radiesse® is synthetic CaHA that has similar characteristics to bone and teeth, and is naturally compatible with the body.

The CaHA microspheres (particles) form a scaffold through which your body’s own collagen grows, and is reputed to produce a longer lasting effect. Over time, your body absorbs the gel carrier while collagen has started to grow and infiltrate the area, replacing the gel with your own, natural tissue. (see the below illustrations) The Radiesse® microspheres continue to provide the support and structure for your body to grow new tissue and collagen until the microspheres are also safely and naturally absorbed into your body.

Radiesse® has been approved for use in many countries and in the U.S. has been cleared for treatment of the nasolabial fold known as smile lines and facial wasting in HIV positive patients. Other applications are still being evaluated.
