Cosmetic Ear Surgery
Performed by Dr. Maas

Otoplasty (plastic surgery on ears) is the surgical procedure otoplasty surgeons use to modify the appearance of the external ear, especially the protruding ear. It is often performed on children in the preschool years. Adults can also benefit from changing the shape and contour of the external ear. Defects of the ear, such as ‘cauliflower ear,’ and repair of injury can also be part of the otoplasty procedure.

The incision for otoplasty is in the back of the ear to expose the ear cartilage. Portions of the cartilage are repositioned and may be removed. Permanent sutures may be used to maintain the new position. The skin behind the ear is sutured, and a soft dressing secures and protects the ears in their new position for several days. The skin sutures are removed within a few days.

There may be some swelling and bruising of the ears after the operation, as well as mild discomfort. The swelling subsides within the first few days and the bruising in a few weeks. Significant pain is rare, and medication can control any discomfort.

Special cases of patients born without external ears or with badly deformed ears are handled in a team fashion. The clinic’s Microtia team can effectively handle these significant deformities. The patient’s family should seek consultation with Dr. Maas for these specialized cosmetic ear surgery procedures.
