Many patients don’t need a full or lower facelift to address their needs! For patient with thickened neck bands, “waddles”, and/or crepey aged-looking neck skin, often a source of disharmony with an otherwise youthful vibrant face, the neck lift is an excellent treatment option.
Neck lifts are a San Francisco office procedure that can be performed with local anesthesia and mild oral sedative/analgesic. The procedure has three basic components or options based on the condition of the aging or hanging neck.
The first component is neck liposuction. This is performed, as with all components, after local anesthesia is employed for a comfortable experience. A small incision is hidden in a crease under the chin and dilute local anesthesia is infused to provide complete numbness and breakup fat globules if present. A small cannula is then used to create dozens of tiny tunnels or tracts that stimulate a wound healing and contraction process.
If neck or “platysmal” bands are present they are attenuated or eliminated by a combination of myotomy and what we refer to as “corset platysmaplasty”. These procedures reduce the thickness of these hypertrophic or overthickened muscles to provide an angled contour to the neck when seen in profile view.
Finally, an incision disguised behind the ear and the hairline behind hear is made and lose redundant skin is carefully elevated and pulled to achieve a smooth and youthful contour to neck. Small suture s and clips are used to close the incisions. These are removed within a week or so and swelling is typically pretty limited. Bruising is moderate to minimal in most patients and resolves as all bruises resolve.
Many patients benefit from supplementary or alternative procedures for neck skin texture and laxity such as fractional laser resurfacing (Active FX) or radiofrequency treatments (Velashape).
