Hair Transplant for Men San Francisco
Hair Transplant for Men by Dr Maas
Hair restoration for men in San Fransisco is safer, less invasive and more natural than ever before, thanks to advancements in hair transplantation techniques. Today, transplantation can be performed by individual strands or a grouping of follicles, allowing customization of the procedure to the unique needs and desired results of each patient. The Maas Clinic offers both of these techniques to our male patients, ensuring each individual receives the natural, efficient results they are hoping for.
Men and Hair Loss
By the age of 35, as many as 66 percent of all men will have experienced hair loss to some degree, according to the American Hair Loss Association. By the time men hit their 50s, the number increases to 85 percent. Most of those cases (around 95 percent) are a result of androgenetic alopecia or male pattern baldness. This means the hair loss is not attributed to any type of serious medical condition. However, the social and psychological impact of hair loss can be significant for men, affecting their relationships and even their quality of life.
The Hair Transplantation Process
Hair transplantation procedures involve removing hair from one area of the scalp (donor site) and placing into the area where hair loss has occurred. This can be performed through a variety of techniques. In the past, hair transplantation typically involved removing a long strip of hair from the donor site and placing it into the transplant location. This technique required a long incision that left visible scarring. Today, the hair strip method has been modified to allow for smaller sections and incisions that are nearly imperceptible after healing is completed.
What is FUE? What is FUT?
FUE stands for follicular unit extraction and it is one of the most popular methods of hair transplantation today thanks to devices that make the process more efficient and accurate. This procedure removes individual follicles from the donor site and places them one by one into the treatment area. At The Maas Clinic, we use both the NeoGraft and the SmartGraft devices to enhance the patient experience and the overall results from our FUE procedures.
FUT or follicular unit transplantation is very similar to FUE with the only difference being how we remove the hair from the donor site. Instead of removing follicles individually, they are removed in a small strip, allowing the surgeon to take more follicles in a single extraction. The follicles are then separated and placed into the treatment area one at a time, the same as the FUE technique. Donor areas are constricted, ensuring incisions are small and scarring is minimized.
When choosing a hair transplant technique, there are different factors to keep in mind including how much donor’s hair is available and the amount needed to create the best possible result in the treatment area. However, your choice of surgeon for your hair transplantation procedure will be much more important that the technique used in terms of the success of your results. Dr. Maas has experience in both of these techniques and can use either one to create the best possible outcome for you.
What to Expect from Your Procedure
Dr. Maas performs hair transplantation on his male patients using local anesthesia. He uses a local anesthetic with a bit of epinephrine in the mix to minimize bleeding during the procedure. A special tool is used to extract the follicle from the donor site and then inserted into the treatment area, taking care to place the hair in the appropriate direction to create a natural look.
The process can take some time to complete, but is comfortable and involves minimal downtime afterward. A few hours after your procedure you will be able to return home and you can wash your hair after just a couple of days. You will be instructed to hold off on blow drying and combing the hair for a bit longer to give the treatment areas time to heal. Patients can return to regular activities within a week or two. Hair transplantation offers permanent results, with implanted hair that will grow and require care just like the hair naturally placed on the head.
