Stop Underarm Sweating for good | Introducing MiraDry
Excessive sweating can be physically uncomfortable and socially embarrassing, keeping some individuals from wearing certain types of clothing or even attending events and activities. Actually a medical condition known as hyperhidrosis, the tendency to sweat too can have a profound impact on your quality of life overall. Now, there is a non-surgical treatment for hyperhidrosis that eliminates the excessive sweat and may even allow patients to go antiperspirant free forever. MiraDry is now available at The Maas Clinic’s San Francisco location to provide our patients an effective, non-surgical solution to hyperhidrosis.
The Facts about Hyperhidrosis
Our bodies sweat when we are nervous or warm to cool down our bodies and prevent overheating. If you have hyperhidrosis, your sweating mechanism goes into overdrive, causing you to sweat even when you are not exposed to a stressful situation or high temperatures. In addition to sweating more often, hyperhidrosis results in an excessive amount of sweat that can drench clothing, leading to obvious outward signs of the condition.
Hyperhidrosis can be primary or secondary. Primary hyperhidrosis is diagnosed when no underlying cause for the condition can be found. Secondary hyperhidrosis is due another underlying medical condition, such as diabetes, thyroid dysfunction or some types of cancer. Secondary hyperhidrosis can usually be treated by addressing the medical condition causing the sweating. People diagnosed with primary hyperhidrosis are generally good candidates for MiraDry treatments to stop the excess sweating at its source.
What is miraDry?
MiraDry is a revolutionary treatment that targets the source of hyperhidrosis, overactive sweat glands. The device uses controlled energy to destroy the sweat glands underneath the arms so that sweat production is almost completely halted in this area. Because the sweat glands will not return, MiraDry permanently stops underarm sweat in just one treatment.
MiraDry is a painless procedure that can be performed at The Maas Clinic in around one hour. You will be able to return home as soon as the procedure is over and most of our patients are back to regular activities the same day or within a day or two after the procedure. Most patients will see significant results after a single MiraDry treatment session and will not need to return for any subsequent procedures to maintain those results.
The Benefits of miraDry
MiraDry offers a number of benefits over other treatments for hyperhidrosis:
- The only non-invasive procedure approved by the FDA to treat excessive sweating
- A single, one-hour MiraDry treatment usually produces full results
- Can be performed in our office, using local anesthetic to ensure patient comfort
- Results can usually be seen right away following the procedure and are permanent
- Little or no downtime after the MiraDry treatment
- The MiraDry procedure is non-surgical and toxin-free, reducing procedure risks
- Some patient are able to live free of deodorants and antiperspirants forever
With a myriad of benefits, MiraDry is a procedure to consider if you are suffering the physical discomfort and social embarrassment of excessive sweating. Dr. Maas will be happy to meet with you at his San Francisco office to discuss your concerns and determine whether MiraDry is the right treatment choice for you.
About the Procedure
When you come in for your MiraDry treatment, we will begin my marking the areas in your armpits where the treatment will be administered. Once the markings are in place, you will be given a local anesthesia to numb the area so you are comfortable throughout the procedure. The handheld device will then be placed over the treatment area to deliver the controlled thermal energy that destroys the sweat glands without disrupting surrounding skin and tissue.
As the hand piece delivers the energy, you may feel some gentle suction action as the sweat glands are pulled closer to the device so they can be treated more efficiently. This sensation should not be uncomfortable. The device will be moved slightly throughout the treatment to ensure the entire area is addressed. We encourage patients to bring music with them to listen to throughout the procedure if they like.
What to Expect After Treatment
After your MiraDry treatment, your armpits may be slightly red, swollen and tender. Ice packs and over-the-counter-medication can ease any discomfort to make it easier to return to regular activities. You will also be instructed to avoid shaving the area or wearing deodorant or antiperspirant during the first few days to prevent irritation to the treatment site. Exercise will also be restricted for the first week or so to give the treatment area ample time to heal.
You may see positive results immediately following your procedure, which should be permanent. Clinical studies have shown a single MiraDry treatment eliminates at least 80 percent of the sweat glands in the armpit area, which is usually sufficient to provide patients with the outcome they were hoping for. In some cases, patients can opt for a second MiraDry treatment a few months later to achieve even more dramatic sweat reduction.
Is MiraDry right for me?
MiraDry can be a good choice for both men and women suffering from excessive sweating that has impacted their quality of life. This procedure works on all skin types and tones and is approved for patients age 18 and over. Dr. Maas will perform a full assessment of your condition and medical history to determine whether MiraDry is the right choice for you.
Don’t I need all of my sweat glands?
Eliminating sweat glands in your armpits will not impact your body’s ability to regulate temperature. Your body contains around four million sweat glands and only about two percent of those are found in your armpits. Other areas include the forehead, palms of the hands and the soles of the feet. MiraDry is only effective in treating the sweat glands in the armpits, but this can have a significant and positive effect on the amount of embarrassing sweat your body produces overall.
How long is the treatment session?
Most MiraDry sessions take about one hour to complete. You should be able to return home or to your regular activities as soon as the treatment is over.
Is it painful?
MiraDry treatments are not painful, thanks to the administration of a local anesthetic prior to the procedure. The only discomfort you are likely to feel is the needle pokes as the anesthetic is delivered.
Are there any side effects to worry about?
Redness, swelling and tenderness of the armpits are the most common side effects seen after a MiraDry procedure. Most patients find ice packs and over-the-counter pain medication for the first few days after treatment will keep them comfortable enough to work or participate in other activities.
When can I return to work?
Many of our patients return to work as soon as their MiraDry treatment is over. If you job involves heavy lifting or other strenuous activity, you may want to take a couple of days off work to allow your body time to heal from the procedure.
How soon will I see results?
Patients usually see results from their MiraDry treatment right away. In fact, you may be 100 percent dry in the armpit area for the first couple of weeks after your procedure. However, some sweat may return at that time, as the swelling in the treatment area goes down. The majority of our patients see satisfactory results with just one MiraDry session.
How long will the results last?
Since MiraDry completely destroys sweat glands in the treatment area, the results of your procedure will be permanent. In fact, MiraDry is the only treatment to permanently eliminate hyperhidrosis in the underarm area, other than surgery.
How much does a MiraDry treatment cost?
The cost of a MiraDry treatment will vary somewhat from patient to patient. When you schedule your consultation at The Maas Clinic, we will be happy to evaluate your personal situation and give you a price quote based on our findings.
