Restylane: The Premier Injectable Filler at The Maas Clinic™ in San Francisco

Among the injectable filler materials Dr. Maas offers at The Maas Clinic™ in San Francisco, Restylane is one of the more commonly requested and administered. Restylane is the world’s most used and most studied dermal filler, having been used in over 70 countries and has more than 1.4 million treatments in the US alone. The Restylane family of products is injected in the same fashion as collagen but does not require a skin test, as no allergic reactions are expected. Results are immediate and natural; downtime usually takes only a few hours.

Restylane Silk

Information about Restylane Silk Injectable Gel with 0.3% Lidocaine:

  • Restylane Silk is a crystal clear injectable gel composed of hyaluronic acid, a natural substance already in the body. Restylane Silk is non-animal-based and free from animal protein. Allergy pretesting is not necessary. Restylane Silk contains 0.3% lidocaine, added to reduce the discomfort associated with the treatment.
  • A clinical study was conducted with Restylane Silk to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of injections to enhance lip fullness and improve the wrinkles around the lips. The study included 221 primarily female subjects and evaluated subjects with light and dark skin. Subjects with very dark skin were not studied.
  • 98% of subjects reported improvement in their lip fullness 14 days after injection, and 76% still had lip improvement six months after. Most adverse events were mild in intensity, and the most common symptoms were lip swelling, discoloration, and lip pain. The incidence of adverse events decreased significantly after the second treatment. Restylane Silk is contraindicated for patients with severe allergies manifested by a history of anaphylaxis or the presence of multiple severe allergies.
  • Patients with a history of allergies to gram-positive bacterial proteins; patients with bleeding disorders; for implantation in anatomical spaces other than the dermis or submucosal implantation for lip augmentation and should not be used in patients with previous hypersensitivity to local anesthetics of the amide type, such as lidocaine.

Restylane Lyft

Of the many injectable fillers offered at The Maas Clinic™, Restylane Lyft is an injectable cosmetic dermal filler used to soften wrinkles and facial folds of patients worldwide. It is also a popular filler for lip augmentation, facial depressions, and scarring.

Restylane Lyft is manufactured by Medicis, the same company that manufactures Restylane. Restylane Lyft is primarily the same product as Restylane, but Restylane Lyft filler contains a more significant concentration of hyaluronic acid. Because of this higher concentration of hyaluronic acid, Restylane Lyft is usually used for more prominent folds. At the same time, Restylane is better suited for minor wrinkles or maintaining the results of a previous Restylane Lyft injection.

Restylane Lyft is made from non-animal stabilized hyaluronic acid (NASHA) gel, meaning Restylane Lyft contains no animal products. Since hyaluronic acid is a natural substance found in the skin and other tissues, there is no need for a skin test when using Restylane Lyft filler.  The hyaluronic acid in Restylane Lyft injections supplements the body’s natural supply, which becomes depleted with age. Restylane Lyft is biodegradable, so its effects are not permanent. The results of a Restylane Lyft filler treatment tend to last six months to a year. This is much longer than the typical results of collagen injections, which may only last three to six months.

Restylane Kysse

Attractively shaped, perfectly plump lips can transform your face. As the popularity of dermal fillers continues to thrive, non-surgical lip augmentation has become a mainstay of facial rejuvenation. Fillers containing hyaluronic acid (HA) are versatile, highly effective products for contouring, volumizing, and hydrating the lips without the potential drawbacks of surgery.
Restylane Kysse is the newest filler that promises to deliver beautiful results. This sophisticated addition to the Restylane family subtly enhances the lip body and defines the border to create soft, supple, natural-looking lips.

At the Maas Clinic™, we always look for the latest and most effective aesthetic treatments. We invite you to use our contact form to schedule an in-person consultation with Dr. Maas and learn more about lip augmentation with Restylane Kysse.

Restylane Contour

Galderma has recently received FDA approval for a new product, Restylane Contour, a hyaluronic acid dermal filler used for cheek augmentation and correcting midface contour deficiencies. Many patients are searching for ways to maintain a more youthful appearance. While cheeks are the cornerstone of our faces, they are also the first area to show signs of aging as they lose shape and elasticity. Restylane Contour was explicitly designed for this critical area, resulting in dynamic contouring to help amplify patients’ natural-looking beauty, starting with the cheeks.

Restylane and Restylane Lyft

Restylane and Restylane Lyft are hyaluronic acids, injectable agents well suited to correct wrinkles, enhance lips, or augment soft tissue. Hyaluronic acid may be derived from animal sources (rooster comb) or, as in the case of Restylane and Restylane Lyft, may be laboratory-created. Restylane Lyft is primarily the same product as Restylane, but Restylane Lyft filler contains a more significant concentration of hyaluronic acid. Because of this higher concentration of hyaluronic acid, Restylane Lyft is usually used for more prominent folds. At the same time, Restylane injections are better suited for minor wrinkles or maintaining the results of a previous Restylane Lyft injection.

Common uses for Restylane and Restylane Lyft include:

  • Wrinkle correction
  • Diminishing worry lines, smile lines, crow’s feet, marionette lines at the corners of the mouth, and smoker’s lines
  • Lip enhancement
  • Reducing the severity of nasolabial folds
  • Chin augmentation
  • Filling cheek depressions
  • Redefining lip border
  • Softening acne scars

Other less common uses for Restylane and Restylane Lyft include:

  • Filling hollows under the eyes
  • Creating a temporary eyebrow lift
  • Correcting facial depressions caused by fat loss
  • Softening the appearance of jowls

Non-Surgical Lower Blepharoplasty

Dermal facial fillers are an excellent solution to minimize the appearance of dark circles under the eyes. Several different factors can cause dark circles. In many individuals, the skin directly under the eyes is very thin, so the muscle and blood vessels can be seen more clearly. Dark circles can also result from fat bulging in the lower eyelid or insufficient fat directly underneath the eye (tear trough), giving a “hollow” appearance. The shadow is less noticeable when fillers such as Restylane are injected into this tear-trough area, making you look more rested. Swelling and bruising after the injections can occur in some patients but are usually minimal and easily covered with makeup. One is Oxygenetics, a mineral-based foundation that is safe during healing and very effective at covering minor post-operative bruising.

Lunchtime Blepharoplasty

As we age, the firmly suspended facial tissue so closely associated with youth begins to succumb to the force of gravity. When the fat pockets immediately beneath the eyes begin to droop, two effects are realized:

  • This “infraorbital” fat that has shifted downward now rests atop pre-existing fat in the upper cheek area, which results in an elevated fatty area that further exaggerates the depth and hollowness of the under-eye depressions
  • The previously fatty area is now devoid of tissue, resulting in a darkened, hollow appearance under the eyes. These depressions are commonly known as “bags"

These “bags” under the eyes may result in a tired and more aged appearance. Until recently, the only significant improvement was gained by undergoing a “lower blepharoplasty,” a surgical reshaping of the lower eyelid. A lower blepharoplasty may still be necessary if the depressions worsen, but there is now a minimally invasive option that may delay surgical treatment. A “Lunchtime Blepharoplasty” is achieved by placing a dermal filler, such as Restylane or Radiesse, into the recessed area under the eye to replace the pocket of fatty tissue that has gravitated downward. The procedure takes less than an hour, and there is minimal associated downtime. Some bruising may occur but is easily camouflaged with cosmetics.

What Is Restylane Kysse?

Restylane Kysse is a hyaluronic acid filler specifically designed to provide excellent outcomes for the lips. It contains smaller particles than similar products on the market and is the first FDA-approved lip filler to use XpresHAn Technology™. This proprietary manufacturing process creates a gel that integrates seamlessly into the tissue. Kysse’s unique formulation and textural qualities mean that it does not create a firm, structured result that can be undesirable in the lips. Instead, Kysse achieves a soft, flexible feel and natural expression in motion.

How Safe Is Restylane Kysse?

Kysse is FDA-approved for use in adults 21 years of age and older. Before its approval in the United States, Kysse was available in international markets and tested in a clinical study to confirm its safety and efficacy. HA fillers are generally very safe products with a low incidence of adverse outcomes or long-term side effects. If any complications arise, Kysse can be dissolved with an enzyme that expedites the natural breakdown of hyaluronic acid.

Who Should Consider Restylane Kysse Injections?

In general, two categories of patients express interest in lip fillers. Some patients visit The Maas Clinic™ because they have naturally thin lips. Even in the peak of their youth, these patients never had the full and sensual look they hoped for. Other patients come to Dr. Maas seeking to reverse signs of aging. These patients have noticed a reduction in lip volume over time and the development of fine lines around the mouth. In skillful hands, Restylane Kysse can be used to:

  • Add volume to the lip body
  • Define the lip edges (vermillion border)
  • Correct anatomical asymmetries
  • Smooth vertical wrinkles (perioral lines)

The Restylane Kysse Procedure

When you come to our San Francisco clinic for lip injections, we will collect information about your health history and treatment goals to ensure that Kysse is right. We will also take photos before your injections, so we have a baseline before creating your desired improvements. Most patients can have their treatment on the same day as their consultation. Dr. Maas will apply a topical anesthetic cream before your injections if desired. Although Kysse contains lidocaine, and the tiny needle used for the injections does not cause much discomfort, some patients feel more comfortable using numbing medication. Once the cream has taken effect, Dr. Maas will place the filler strategically around your lips to create a smooth and even outcome. The injections take only a few minutes, and you can resume your routine immediately afterward.

What to Expect After Restylane Kysse Injections

There is no downtime and minimal aftercare following Kysse injections. You can expect mild swelling after your procedure that can be managed by applying ice to the area. You may also develop small amounts of bruising around the injection sites. In most cases, these effects are not disruptive enough to keep you from going about your day. Most normal activities, including eating, drinking, and kissing, are fine, provided they are not too aggressive. Preliminary results are noticeable immediately and will become more refined as the swelling goes down.

Restylane Kysse Results

Once your final results are apparent, you can enjoy fuller lips and a refreshed appearance for many months. This unique formulation offers a natural result, not the “duck lips” or “bee-stung” lips we see too often in the media. Dr. Maas’s technique achieves a natural-appearing lip with proportionate fullness, a reasonable border definition, and a smooth perioral area. Because Kysse is explicitly formulated for the lips, it is more durable than other dermal fillers used for lip augmentation. Results may last up to one year in some patients and can be maintained by scheduling regular treatment sessions at our office.

What Is Restylane Contour?

Restylane Contour is Galderma’s first and only product for cheeks formulated with XpresHAn technology in the US. It uses a unique manufacturing process that results in a smooth, injectable gel. The final product integrates more naturally into the skin to create natural, dynamic expressions. While this is the first product Galderma has released for cheeks with the XpresHAn technology, three other products have found striking success with the same formulation. Contour finds FDA approval after demonstrating extensive safety and efficacy testing.

Why Do We Need Restylane Contour?

Hyaluronic acids replace volume loss during the natural aging process and from environmental exposure. Volume loss is caused primarily by reducing essential proteins in our bodies. Collagen, the most abundant protein, keeps our skin taut. Unfortunately, we lose collagen production rapidly — about 1% every year after the age of 20, explaining why we don’t experience many signs of aging during our teen years, but the process seems to accelerate as we enter our late 20s. Like all hyaluronic acid fillers, Restylane Contour aims to replace the volume our faces and bodies have lost. By providing the missing volume, wrinkles, and fine lines are smoothed out, and sunken areas again look healthy and youthful. This process shaves years off our appearance, especially with a product focusing on our cheeks. Contour is an injectable procedure, which means the patient can avoid more extensive surgical procedures to correct the same issues. Other than injectables like Contour, there are very few non-surgical options — people who are looking to improve their appearance but avoid surgery need these kinds of treatments.

Am I a Candidate for Restylane Contour?

If you are over the age of 21 and are looking to improve the fullness of your cheeks, you will likely be a candidate for this procedure. Conditions or health concerns that would prevent you from having Contour injected are few and far between, but you must speak with a medical professional to ensure this is the best option for your treatment. The best candidates are also aware of what Restylane Contour can genuinely accomplish. If you come in with unrealistic expectations, you are setting yourself up to be disappointed by an otherwise successful procedure.

What Should I Expect from Restylane Contour Procedure?

Restylane Contour is an injectable procedure, which means the process is as painless and straightforward as possible. When you arrive at The Maas Clinic™ in San Francisco for your treatment, you will be taken into one of our back offices. The area that is being treated will be thoroughly cleaned to avoid infection. A topical numbing agent is sometimes performed to help with any potential discomfort, but most patients can endure the treatment without numbing with very few problems. Once the area is cleaned (and possibly numbed), your medical professional will begin injecting into your cheeks. According to Galderma, patients treated with Restylane Contour required less total volume injected to achieve optimal aesthetic results than those treated with a competitor. Once the injections are completed, the procedure is finished.

What Should I Expect During Restylane Contour Recovery?

There is no lengthy recovery or downtime you will need to worry about since Restylane Contour is performed entirely through dermal injections. You may experience mild redness or soreness at the injection sites, but these typically dissipate within a few days.

What Results Can I Achieve with Restylane Contour?

Many patients report noticing results immediately after the procedure. Still, as the substance settles within the skin, you will continue to see an improvement in the treated areas for a few weeks or months after the injections. You can expect to experience significant improvement in volume loss in the cheeks and near the chin and jawline. Restylane Contour comes from a long line of successful dermal fillers, making it highly reliable. During one Phase 3 trial, 98% of patients said they were satisfied with their Contour results near the one-year mark. Your results will endure as long as you continue treatment. All dermal fillers eventually need to be touched up because of additional skin degradation and the fading of the filler substance itself. How often you need touch-ups will depend on your unique reaction to the treatment. Still, our highly experienced medical team can help you develop an effective treatment plan to maintain optimal results.

How Much Does Restylane Contour Cost?

Restylane Contour is a relatively new procedure, which means pricing will vary depending on where your treatment is performed. Just remember that cheaper isn’t always better — medical professionals with the correct training can charge more than less experienced professionals.

Can I Combine My Restylane Contour with Other Procedures?

Injectable filler treatment can be combined with virtually any other treatment, including dermal fillers and surgeries. Here is a list of surgical and non-surgical combination options: Juvederm, Restylane, Radiesse, Belotero, Sculptra, Botox, Dysport, Kybella, Sculptra, Xeomin, rhinoplasty, facelift, eye lift, brow lift, neck lift. There is no limit to the number of combinations you can have with your Restylane Contour treatment. During your initial consultation, ask our team about the most effective combination procedures for your unique conditions.
