Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is an injectable treatment used to remove visible spider veins and some small varicose veins. The procedure involves delivering a sclerosing solution directly into the affected vessel via injection. The solution causes inflammation and scarring inside the vein, rendering it nonfunctional. The vessel gradually closes and shrinks so that the body can reabsorb it.

Sclerotherapy treatments typically take 45 minutes or less to complete right in our office. There is no anesthesia needed for the procedure, so you will be able to drive yourself home after your appointment if you like.

The sclerosing agent is injected down the length of the affected vein in one-inch increments, to ensure the entire vein collapses and disappears. Once the vessel is gone, blood naturally reroutes through healthy veins nearby. Some patients may need a second treatment session to achieve optimal results.

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)

IPL treatments, also known as photorejuvenation, is one of the only procedures that effectively eliminates vascular redness associated with rosacea, acne, and sun damage. This procedure efficiently removes the most superficial spider veins and broken capillaries, particularly those that form on the face. At the same time, this technology rejuvenates the skin to create a smoother, more youthful complexion even while it removes the visible vessels. IPL treatments are performed using a topical anesthetic to ensure your comfort throughout your appointment. You can head right back to your routine after your session since there is no downtime afterward. Sun protection is critical after this treatment since the skin will be vulnerable to burning and damage for a few weeks.

Laser Vein Treatment

Dr. Maas also uses the Nd: YAG Lumenis laser to treat some visible veins. The nonablative, noninvasive laser works similarly to IPL but uses one wavelength of infrared light rather than the multiple wavelengths employed by the IPL device. The laser light targets the blood inside the damaged vessel, causing it to coagulate and seal closed. Treatment sessions using the Lumenis device typically take less than 30 minutes to complete and do not require any anesthetic beforehand. The procedure is relatively comfortable, and there are few side effects after your session. You should be able to head back to your regular activities as soon as your appointment is over.

RF Ablation

Radiofrequency technology can also be used to eliminate unsightly, unwanted veins, including larger varicose veins that often appear on the lower leg. This procedure delivers controlled heating directly into the affected vessel, which seals it closed. Like other treatments, the collapsed vein can then be eliminated naturally by the body while blood reroutes to healthy veins nearby.

RF ablation can be performed using local anesthetic and rarely requires more than a day of downtime. Tiny incisions are used to insert a thin fiber into the vein, which delivers the RF energy. The incisions are too small to require sutures and do not typically leave any visible scarring behind.

If your varicose veins have started to cause uncomfortable symptoms such as heaviness, aching, or swollen extremities, these symptoms should also be alleviated or even eliminated after your procedure. Visible veins can become a cosmetic embarrassment, even keeping you from clothing or activities you love.

With the right vein treatment, you can say goodbye to unsightly veins and hello to clearer, more beautiful skin. To learn more about any of these procedures, contact The Maas Clinic today.
