Xeomin™ was approved by the Food and Drug Administration this year for the treatment of hyperfunctional frown lines (the deep lines between the eyebrows).
ITTA is similar to the well-known Botox Cosmetic™ and Dysport™ products that are provided as a series of small injections around the area of frown lines and wrinkles. By temporally blocking the signal between the nerve ending and the target muscle, Xeomin™ and the other neuromodulators relax the muscle and thus the skin lines in the affected area.
The clinical trial data, which has been shown at a number of professional society meetings reveals dose response curves similar to that of Botox Cosmetic™
There are subtle differences between Botox Cosmetic™ and Xeomin™ however. These naturally occurring proteins have ‘presumably inactive” surrounding proteins which are stripped away and thus Xeomin™ represents the purified form of the active protein. In theory, this product would be less likely to produce ‘blocking antibodies” that could result, with repeated treatments, in an incomplete or response to the drug. In practice, few if any cosmetic surgery patients have ever developed blocking antibodies to any of the available neuromodulators – in other words the theoretical advantage has demonstrated no clinical importance.
In our experience, Xeomin™ injections provide a similar clinical effect to that of Botox Cosmetic™ immediately after injection at the recommended dose (20 units). There have however been some suggestions that to maintain the expected 3-4 month or longer duration of effect a dose of 25 units may be more appropriate. As unit measures are manufacturer specific, this small difference is unimportant as long as the cost to the patient is not greater.
The Maas Clinic is pleased to offer Xeomin™. Patient satisfaction has been excellent. If you are considering an alternative to Botox Cosmetic™ or Dysport™ or you are a patient new to treatment of lines around the face, please contact the clinic for a consultation and same day treatment. The product appears to be an suitable alternative to the two other products providing improvement in hyperfunctional facial lines.
