What Is PRP Hair Restoration?

PRP stands for platelet-rich plasma, a fundamental building block of the blood that plays a role in numerous bodily functions. One of its many purposes is tissue regeneration. PRP contains high concentrations of platelets and their associated growth factors, proteins, and cytokines, which have remarkable healing capabilities. When used for hair restoration, PRP is injected into thinning or receding areas to stimulate the follicles to produce thicker, healthier hair and trigger new hair growth. PRP therapy is a natural solution for hair loss that harnesses the regenerative capabilities of your own body to improve hair growth.

Who Should Consider PRP Hair Restoration?

PRP therapy can be an effective option for both men and women experiencing signs of hair loss. In the early stages, hair follicles are still active and can benefit more from the regenerative growth factors found in PRP. For individuals in later stages of hair loss, combining PRP injections with other hair restoration treatments may be more beneficial. The ideal candidate for PRP hair restoration is in good overall health with no underlying skin conditions and has reasonable expectations for the procedure's outcome. Because PRP is derived from a patient's blood, there is no risk of allergy or rejection, and treatment is safe for all skin types.

The PRP Hair Restoration Procedure

PRP injections for hair loss are administered in-office and require no significant preparation before your appointment. The procedure involves three steps. First, a small amount of blood is drawn. Then, the blood is processed in a centrifuge that separates the red and white blood cells from the plasma. Finally, when the platelet-rich plasma has been isolated, it is injected into the area impacted by hair loss. The treatment is the quickest part of the process and is typically well tolerated using compressed cold air. Most patients report feeling little to no discomfort.

What to Expect After PRP Hair Restoration

One of the primary advantages of PRP hair restoration is that there is no downtime. It is common for patients to experience redness, swelling, or tightness of the scalp, but these reactions usually resolve on their own within a day or two. Regular hair washing can be resumed right away. Recovery after this nonsurgical treatment is significantly shorter and more comfortable than recovery after hair surgery.

PRP Hair Restoration Results

PRP can achieve a noticeable increase in new hair growth and an increase in the size (diameter) of the hair. The results of this therapy are not immediate or permanent. Patients must complete an initial series of treatments and return for maintenance treatments as directed by Dr. Maas.

Dr. Maas typically recommends starting with four treatments over four consecutive months, followed by quarterly treatments for the first year and quarterly treatments, at a minimum, for each year going forward. A consistent treatment schedule that reflects your hair's natural growth cycles will yield the most favorable outcome.

Combining Hair Restoration Treatments for Enhanced Results

Some patients achieve satisfying results using only plasma injections for hair loss. However, many patients benefit from combining hair restoration therapies that work synergistically to maximize results. Dr. Maas often recommends PRP injections in combination with medications or hair transplant surgery. The right combination of hair restoration treatments can dramatically enhance the benefits of each treatment. Because a multifaceted approach is so often recommended, it's essential to choose a practice like The Maas Clinic™ that fully complements hair restoration procedures. Dr. Maas will determine whether PRP alone is sufficient for you or if you might benefit from including other therapies in your treatment plan. Patients of The Maas Clinic™ and The Appearance Care Center have the following options:

Topical Medications

Topical medications are applied directly to the area where hair is thinning. Dr. Maas prescribes minoxidil (Restore) sold at The Maas Clinic™ to treat androgenetic alopecia or male and female pattern baldness.

Minoxidil works by stimulating the follicles and extending the growth phase of the hair cycle.

Oral Medications

For men, finasteride (sold as Propecia) can limit hair loss by blocking the androgen DHT. Dr. Maas typically prescribes his proprietary formula of finasteride, Hair Restore™, instead of Propecia.

For women, Dr. Maas may recommend a diuretic medication called spironolactone that also works by reducing androgens.

Hair Surgery

Today's advanced hair transplantation techniques are safer, less invasive, and don't result in an unnatural or visibly segmented appearance. Dr. Maas can perform hair transplant surgery by removing and transferring healthy follicles individually (FUE or follicular unit extraction) or in a group (FUT or follicular unit transplantation). Both techniques can deliver permanent, natural-looking results with minimal scarring.
