Rhinoplasty, or nasal surgery, is a way to change elements of one’s nasal structure in order to address cosmetic and functional issues. What is the difference between a cosmetic and a functional issue?
A cosmetic issue is one that relates to the appearance of the nose. Examples of this include a dorsal hump and an overprojected nasal tip, both of which can be corrected using rhinoplasty techniques.
A functional issue, on the other hand, is one that directly impacts the nose’s ability to correctly function. Examples of this include a deviated septum and any other structural problems that cause the nasal passages to be blocked or made smaller. These problems are also fixable with rhinoplasty.
